What is portable appliance testing?

PAT testing is the term used to describe the examination of electrical appliances and equipment to ensure they are safe to use.

Most electrical safety defects can be found by visual examination, but some types of defect can only be found when testing.

A portable appliance is any equipment which is powered between 40 - 240 volts and is connected to the electrical mains through a plug.

Although not a legal requirement the Electricity at Works Act requires maintenance and regular testing of equipment, as does the Health & Safety at Works act, which puts a duty of care upon employer & employee to ensure safety in the workplace.

Some councils require PAT testing to properties before letting to tenants.

How often should I have a PAT test?

The interval test is normally 12 months, but can be between 6 - 24 months depending on environment and working conditions such as heavily used drills on construction sites.

Will a PAT test stop me from my work?

Tests of equipment are carried out with minimal disruption, we can carry out tests after work hours if beneficial.
